Madeline Island and Basswood Island dominate this coastal survey within the Apostle Islands archipelago. The geography is defined by the deep waters of the North Channel and West Channel, which isolate these landmasses from the Wisconsin mainland. On the southern portion of Madeline Island, the small community within La Pointe Twp is documented near Chebomnicon Bay, including the Greenwood Cem.

Evidence of historical industry is found on the western shore of Basswood Island at a Quarry, situated within the Apostle Islands State Forest. The eastern side of Madeline Island features the distinct shoreline of Big Bay and its inland Big Bay Lagoon, leading out to Big Bay Point. This mapping, based on 1963 aerial photography, captures the islands before significant modern development altered the rugged Lake Superior coastline.
