The Ohio River carves a deep valley through this landscape, serving as the primary geographic and political boundary between Indiana and Kentucky. Along its northern banks, the massive Jefferson Proving Ground dominates the interior of Jefferson Co, while Clifty Falls State Park preserves the sharp elevation drops typical of the region's river bluffs. To the west, the transportation corridor defined by I-65 and the P C RR links important regional hubs such as Seymour, Austin, and Scottsburg.

Low-lying wetlands and conservation areas like the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge and Hardy Lake State Recreation Area highlight the complex drainage patterns of the Muscatatuck River and its many forks.
