Kings Canyon National Park encompasses this entire High Sierra landscape, defined by dramatic elevation changes and a complex hydrologic network. The territory is split by the Monarch Divide and Cirque Crest, which separate the drainages of the Middle Fork Kings River to the north and the South Fork Kings River to the south. Alpine basins are scattered across the map, ranging from the Lake Basin in the northeast to the evocatively named Lake of the Fallen Moon in the southwest.
