In the late nineteenth century, this region was a critical nexus of river transport and expanding rail lines. The Southern Pacific R.R. San Francisco and Portland Line connects a string of agricultural hubs including Gridley, Biggs, and Live Oak, while the Yuba River meets the Feather at the twin cities of Marysville and Yuba City.

Notable for its hydraulic history, the map depicts the Levees of Spring Valley Mining Co stretching toward the Butte Sink. Along the riverbanks, a network of infrastructure facilitates movement across the water, from Hock Farm to a series of landings and ferries such as Moons Ferry, Dunns Ferry, and Grimes Landing.
