Mc Neil Island (Federal Penitentiary) dominates the northern half of this Puget Sound survey, showing the complex of reservoirs, pumping stations, and roads like North 15th Avenue that supported the facility. The island is separated from the mainland and neighboring landmasses by narrow waterways such as Pitt Passage and Balch Passage. On the western shore of Mc Neil Island, the McDermott Point Lighthouse (Abandoned) stands as a silent sentinel over the sound.

Anderson Island to the south reveals a more residential and recreational character, featuring the settlement of Villa Beach and the inland waters of Florence Lake and Josephine Lake. Genealogy and local history are preserved at the Hillcrest Cem and Anderson Island Cem. The southeastern corner of the map includes a portion of the Fort Lewis Military Reservation, where three major railroads—the Union Pacific, Northern Pacific, and Great Northern—converge near Solo Point.
