About this map

The Saint Elias Mountains dominate this high-altitude landscape in eastern Alaska, where the vast scale of the Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park and adjacent Wrangell-St. Elias Wilderness meet. The terrain is defined by extreme vertical relief and glaciation, most notably evidenced by the presence of the Klutlan Glacier in the northeastern reaches of the quadrangle. This 2023 survey by the U.S. Geological Survey reveals a landscape almost entirely devoid of human infrastructure, centered instead on the preservation of a massive alpine ecosystem. Survey boundaries such as t6s r23e and t7s r23e partition the wilderness, while the Wrangell-Saint Elias National Preserve occupies the southern portions of the sheet, providing a precise look at the modern management boundaries of these protected federal lands.
