McDermid Ranch sits at the center of this high-desert landscape where the Cherry Creek Range meets the open expanse of Steptoe Valley. Water sources are vital features here, marked by isolated points like Julians Hole, Cheat Grass Spring, and Quaker Spring that dot the arid basins and mountain flanks. The drainage of McDermid Cr flows eastward from the mountains toward the Currie Ponds in the northeast corner. This 2018 survey illustrates a classic Great Basin ranching environment, defined by its system of deep-cut canyons including East Taylor Canyon, Calf Canyon, and Mountain Lion Canyon. Transport through the area is maintained via unpaved routes such as Calf Canyon Rd and Cherry Creek Rd, which provide access to this remote portion of Elko County.
