About this map

Agricultural development and water management define this desert landscape near the northern shore of the Salton Sea. The settlement of Mecca serves as a central hub, situated along the Southern Pacific railroad line. Much of the surrounding territory is comprised of the Torres Martinez Indian Reservation and the Cabazon Indian Reservation, reflecting the region's complex land history. The importance of irrigation in this arid environment is evident through the prominent Coachella Canal and numerous Duck Ponds and Reservoirs scattered across the valley floor. To the east, the terrain rises sharply into the Mecca Hills, carved by the dramatic Painted Canyon and Skeleton Canyon, while the Whitewater River channel cuts through the agricultural grid, illustrating the ongoing efforts to direct water through this low-lying basin.
