The Black River winds southward through this Taylor County landscape, passing the settlement of Whittlesey before reaching the larger community at Medford. This 2011 survey reveals a cluster of burial grounds and civic institutions concentrated near the river, including the Whittlesey Catholic Cemetery, Whittlesey Lutheran Cemetery, and a series of cemeteries in southern Medford such as Holy Rosary Cemetery and Evergreen Cemetery.
