About this map

Deep interior Alaska is defined by the rigid grid of the Public Land Survey System in this 2016 survey, where the township and range boundaries of T1s R21e, T1s R22e, T2s R21e, and T2s R22e march across a landscape of extreme verticality. The terrain consists of high, complex ridgelines and deep drainage basins that characterize this portion of the Yukon-Koyukuk region. Unlike maps of more settled areas, this sheet contains no named man-made landmarks, schools, or churches, reflecting the incredible isolation of the Alaskan wilderness. Instead, the map provides a precise mathematical reading of the natural topography, using 40-foot contour intervals to trace the rise and fall of the mountains within T3s R21e and T3s R22e. It is a document of raw geography, capturing the area as it remains today: a territory defined more by its slope and elevation than by human habitation.
