Pine Plains and Millerton serve as the primary rail hubs in this northern Dutchess County landscape at the turn of the century. The region is defined by a dense network of competing rail lines, including the Central New England R.R. and the Poughkeepsie & Eastern R.R., which navigate the narrow valleys and water gaps such as Turkey Hollow. This intricate transportation corridor supported a scatter of small milling and agricultural centers like Stanfordville, Amenia, and Lithgow. The topography is dominated by the prominent ridge of Stissing Mtn. to the west and the Harlem Division of the New York Central and Hudson River R.R. following the Webatuck Creek valley along the Connecticut border. This survey captures a moment when nearly every small valley was connected to the wider world via iron rail, before the consolidation of these rural networks.
