The Sierra Madre Mountains define this high-elevation landscape along the border of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. Within the Los Padres National Forest, the terrain is marked by steep ridges and deep drainages, including Smith Canyon and Flores Canyon. The Cuyama River flows through the northern reaches, winding past the Cuyama Valley where early ranching and transit routes like Old Sierra Madre Rd once provided critical access through the backcountry.
