About this map

Noatak National Preserve encompasses the majority of this landscape in Alaska's North Slope, where the drainage systems of the western Arctic unfold. The Nimiuktuk River flows southward through the western portion of the quadrangle, joined by tributaries such as Klim Cr and Ignisirok Cr. These waterways are central to the region's geography, carving paths through the high-elevation terrain typical of the Brooks Range foothills. To the east, the Amisak River cuts across the corner of the map, while Natinakunit Pass provides a significant geographic notch between the rising peaks. The survey illustrates the stark, unpopulated character of this wilderness area at the beginning of the twenty-first century, showing a landscape defined by natural boundaries and the absence of established roads or permanent settlements.
