The Noatak National Preserve encompasses most of this landscape, where the Nimiuktuk River flows through the upper northwest corner of the quadrangle. The terrain is characterized by complex elevation contours that culminate in the distinctive high point known as Rabbit Ears. This remote Arctic environment sits at the intersection of the North Slope Borough and Northwest Arctic Borough, a boundary line that divides the northern and southern portions of the map. The area is defined by its lack of human infrastructure, focusing instead on the hydrography of the river system and the expansive topography of the central Brooks Range foothills. Researchers can trace the Public Land Survey System grids, including t34n r5w and t12s r34w, which provide the only formal structure to this otherwise wilderness region.
