Mokane sits at the edge of the wide Missouri bottomlands, serving as a focal point for the small settlements and rural farms of southern Callaway County. This landscape is defined by the sharp transition between the upland hills and the expansive river valley, where the Missouri River and Saint Aubert Chute form the southern boundary. The legacy of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad survives here through the Katy Trail, which follows the northern bank of the river through the Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge.
