The Monterey Peninsula in the early twentieth century appears here as a landscape of Spanish-era land grants and burgeoning coastal settlements. While Monterey and Pacific Grove show dense street grids, much of the surrounding area remains divided into large ranchos, including Rancho El Pescadero and Rancho Aguajito. The historic Carmel Mission stands near the mouth of the Carmel River, while the nascent community of Carmel by the Sea begins to take shape nearby.
