About this map

Kineo Mt Kineo rises as a prominent landmark on the western shore of the lake, overlooking Rockwood during this mid-century survey. The landscape is defined by the expansive waters of Moosehead Lake, dotted with numerous islands such as Sugar Island, Deer Island, and Ledge Island. A notable transportation corridor is marked by the Canadian Pacific railroad, which skirts the western shoreline near Burnham Pond, while a network of jeep trails and trails penetrates the dense woods of Days Academy and Misery Gore. The eastern side of the sheet is dominated by the sheltered waters of Spencer Bay and Lily Bay, the latter of which features Lily Bay State Park. This era shows a mix of recreational land use and traditional Maine industries, evidenced by the presence of a Lookout Tower on Mount Kineo and a Gravel Pit near Squaw Bay.
