To the north, the sprawling campus of the Brookhaven National Laboratory occupies a significant portion of the landscape, complete with its own rail link at Upton Station. The area reflects a period of mid-century development, from the residential grids of Shirley and Mastic Beach to the industrial presence of numerous sandpits and the recreational draw of the New York National Speedway.
