About this map

The Mississippi River creates a dramatic series of oxbow-style curves through the heart of this late nineteenth-century riverfront landscape, most notably at Willow Bend and the long stretch of Grand View Reach. The mapping captures the traditional long-lot land divisions characteristic of French-influenced settlement, where thin property lines stretch back from the river toward the expansive wetlands of the interior. These interior reaches are dominated by a labyrinth of waterways including the Amite River, Blind River, and Dutch Bayou, all draining toward the vast Lake Maurepas in the northeast. Transportation is defined by the river and the competing rail lines that flank its banks, such as the Texas and Pacific Railroad and the Louisville New Orleans and Texas Railroad, which served local landings and settlements like Mt. Airy and Edgard.
