McDonald Peak and West McDonald Peak anchor this high-altitude landscape along the border of Lake and Missoula counties. Within the Flathead National Forest, the terrain is defined by a series of steep drainages and alpine lakes, including Long Lake, the Ashley Lakes, and the ironically named Disappointment Lake. A network of high-elevation passages such as Mollman Pass, Elk Pass, and Eagle Pass provide the primary transit points across the divide.
