The North Fork Snoqualmie River carves through this King County landscape, which is defined by its numerous high-elevation water bodies and prominent summits. Ernies Grove stands as a primary point of settlement in the southwest, situated near the river's edge. The terrain rises sharply toward Mount Si and Mount Tenerife, creating a series of natural basins that hold remote waters like Lake Hancock, Calligan Lake, and the smaller Fury Lake.

A network of forestry and access roads, including Fury Lake Rd and SE North Lake Hancock Rd, provides the only terrestrial links through this complex topography. Researchers of the Cascades will find a detailed distribution of lakes across the high country, from Lake Nadeau to the tucked-away Lake Philippa in the northeast corner. This 2011 survey documents the established timber and recreational infrastructure of the early 21st century.
