1950 Map of Mt. Tamalpais

About this map

Mt Tamalpais towers over the coastal landscape of southern Marin County, serving as the anchor for a region defined by its complex shoreline and redwood canyons. Just after mid-century, the area south of the peak is dominated by federal and state lands, including the famous Muir Woods National Monument and the extensive coastal fortifications of Fort Cronkhite Mil Res and Fort Barry Mil Res guarding the north side of the Golden Gate. In the east, a dense network of suburban settlements such as Mill Valley, Larkspur, and Corte Madera traces the base of the mountain, while to the west, the isolated communities of Bolinas and Stinson Beach hug the edge of Bolinas Lagoon. The map preserves the footprint of mid-century infrastructure, from the Radio Towers at Bolinas Point to the Telephone Line cutting across the slopes above Muir Beach.
