About this map

The village of Neponset serves as a central hub in this western Illinois landscape, where the Burlington Northern railroad cuts a straight diagonal through the prairie. In the northern reaches, extensive Strip Mine operations reveal the industrial scale of coal extraction that shaped the local economy and terrain. This industrial presence contrasts with the settled community life evidenced by Neponset High Sch and several local burial grounds, including Floral Hill Cem and Neponset Cem. The terrain is defined by a network of drainage, from Abbott Ditch in the north to the headwaters of the East Fork Spoon River in the south. The western edge of the quadrangle follows the boundary between Henry and Bureau Counties, marking a transition between the townships of Annawan, Mineral, Kewanee, and Neponset. Recreation and rural life are represented by Francis Park and the Bennett Landing Strip.
