Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge dominates the southern reaches of this Hyde County landscape, protecting the shores of Lake Mattamuskeet and Head Lake Island. This early 1950s survey illustrates a coastal environment defined by extensive drainage engineering and managed wetlands, where the Pungo River-Alligator River Waterway Intracoastal Canal cuts a straight path through the low-lying terrain of Currituck and Gum Neck.
