Niceville and Valparaiso occupy the northern reaches of Choctawhatchee Bay, where a complex network of freshwater creeks and bayous meet the Gulf of Mexico. The landscape is defined by its coastal hydrology, with water bodies such as Rocky Bayou, Sarah Ann Bayou, and several smaller ponds like Plew Lake and Trout Lake shaping the development of the two settlements. Northwest Florida State Coll anchors the north side of Niceville, while the eastern portion of the area remains largely defined by the numerous tributaries, including Rocky Cr and Middle Rocky Cr, that cross the Okaloosa and Walton County line.
