The settlement of Noxon serves as the primary outpost on the Clark Fork in this mid-1960s study of northwestern Montana. Situated along the banks of the Cabinet Gorge Reservoir, the community is surrounded by the deep drainages and high ridgelines of the Kaniksu National Forest. The landscape is defined by its verticality, with prominent landmarks such as Loveland Peak and Huckleberry Mountain rising above a complex system of gulches and creeks.

Evidence of early mountain navigation is visible through various segments of (Pack) Trail winding through the high country. To the south, the topography becomes particularly dramatic at Hole-in-the-Wall near Devil Gap, where the headwaters of Marten Creek and Kismet Creek originate. The map documents a moment when the reservoir had recently transformed the river valley, yet the surrounding backcountry remained largely defined by traditional pack routes and fire lookouts like Old Trail Point.
