The Mississippi River meanders through the northeast corner of this terrain, marking the boundary between Itasca and Cass counties. Set entirely within the Chippewa National Forest, the landscape is defined by a complex network of wetlands and water management structures. Significant hydrological engineering is evident in the presence of the W Banks Number One Impoundment, Bear Brook Impoundment, and Sixmile Impoundment, which regulate the flow of Bear Brook and Sixmile Brook as they move through the glacial basin. This modern survey reflects the area's primary use for timber management and outdoor recreation. Numerous forest roads, such as Forest Rte 2164 and Forest Rte 2127, provide access to smaller bodies of water like Nushka Lake and Chub Lake, while the Winnie Snowmobile Trail traverses the northwest, highlighting the importance of seasonal transit in this Northwoods environment.
