About this map

Onyx sits along the S Fourche LaFave River in this section of the Ouachita National Forest during the early 21st century. The landscape is defined by its deep mountain ridges and the water systems that drain them, including the Irons Fork and Robertson Cr. Small settlements and family heritage sites are scattered throughout the hills, evidenced by the Ballew Family Cem near Onyx and the Aly Cem at Aly. The map detail shows a network of forest roads like Co RD 608 and State Hwy 27 providing access to the higher elevations of Bear Head Mtn and White Oak Mtn. Outdoor recreation is well established here, highlighted by the passage of the Ouachita National Recreation Trail through the southern half of the quadrangle, crossing many of the creek beds that feed the river system.
