1900 Map of Oyster Bay

About this map

The North Shore of Long Island is characterized by deeply indented harbors and rising coastal bluffs as seen in this 1900 survey. The maritime landscape is anchored by Hempstead Harbor and the expansive Oyster Bay, with safety for vessels ensured by Sands Point Light and the lonely Execution Rocks L.H. out in the sound. Moving inland from the waterfronts of Sea Cliff and Glenwood Landing, the topography climbs toward Harbor Hill, while a network of Long Island R.R. branches connects the emerging suburbs of Roslyn, Syosset, and Port Washington. On the opposite shore across Long Island Sound, the Westchester coastline is densely mapped around Mamaroneck and Harrison, showing the early integration of these communities with the New York New Haven and Hartford rail corridor.
