About this map

Palmito Hill Battlefield and Palmito Ranch Battlefield anchor this landscape along the lower reaches of the Rio Grande, marking the site of the final land action of the American Civil War. The terrain is defined by a series of lomas, or small elevations, such as Loma del Muerto and Loma de la Jauja, which provided strategic footing above the surrounding coastal wetlands and river bends. The map captures the international boundary between the United States and Mexico, where the river's shifting course has created numerous cutoff features known as bancos, including Caja Pinta Banco Number 80 and San Miguel Banco. Modern industrial infrastructure is represented by the Brownsville Ship Channel to the north, contrasting with traditional landholdings like Old Palmito Ranch and Los Sauces Ranch.
