Palmito Hill Battlefield occupies the center of this coastal landscape, marking the site where the final land action of the American Civil War occurred along the meandering Rio Grande. The terrain is defined by a series of low ridges, or lomas, such as Loma de la Jauja and Loma del Muerto, which rise above the surrounding tidal flats and brush country between San Martin Lake and the river.

Cameron County Engineer W. O. Washington provided local data for this 1930s survey, which documents several historic ranching sites including Old Palmito Ranch and Los Sauces Ranch. The transport network shows the transition from earlier infrastructure, featuring the Old RR Grade running parallel to the modern Boca Chica Highway. Several named bancos, such as El Rincon Banco No 126, illustrate the shifting nature of the international boundary between the United States and Mexico.
