The Logan County seat of Paris serves as a central hub in this early 1960s survey, showing a landscape defined by coal mining and agricultural bottomlands. Numerous Mine Dumps and coal mines dot the terrain around the city, while the Missouri Pacific railroad provides the vital industrial connection through the valley. To the east, the monastic and educational influence of the area is evident at Subiaco, home to the New Subiaco Academy and the St Benedict Cem.

South of the city, the dramatic rise of Short Mountain and Short Mountain Ridge creates a natural barrier, punctuated by the Paris Reservoir and its associated Filtration Plant.
