Gideon and Wardell anchor this mid-century look at the Bootheel’s highly engineered drainage landscape, where the Mississippi River Commission documented an intricate network of canals including Ditch No 66 and Ditch No 60. The map reveals a rural economy dependent on these waterways and the St Louis San Francisco railroad, which links smaller settlements like Pascola and Netherlands. The terrain is marked by remnants of the natural hydrology, such as the Little River and Grey Horse Lake, now subordinated to the grid of agricultural ditches.
