The rugged boundary between Tuolumne and Mariposa Counties is defined here by the high elevation of Peñon Blanco Ridge and the deep cuts of the Tuolumne River drainage. At the time of this 1962 field check, the landscape is a patchwork of early mining claims and small cattle-country settlements. Significant mining heritage is visible through labels for the Buzzard Roost Mine, Salambo Mine, and the White Rock Mine near the county line.

Water management and recreation dominate the western and southern edges of the sheet, where the rising waters of the Don Pedro Reservoir and Lake McClure submerge the lower canyons. Local history is preserved in isolated landmarks like the Granite Spring Cem and the Blanchard Fire Control Sta, while the presence of a Golf Course and several airstrips near Kassabaum Flats indicates the mid-century transition from a purely extractive economy toward seasonal recreation and rural residential use.
