The rolling grasslands and wetland complexes of the North Dakota prairie define this landscape along the boundary of Mountrail and Ward Counties. The terrain is marked by a dense network of glacial potholes and small water bodies, notably Carpenter Lake in the northeastern section. This environment is preserved through multiple conservation sites, including the Mountrail County Waterfowl Production Area and the Ward County Waterfowl Production Area, which protect critical habitat in an area otherwise divided by the precise grid of the Public Land Survey System.
