About this map

Emigrant Road (Lander Cutoff) and the Emigrant Trail traverse the northern heights of this landscape, marking the historic path of westward migration through what is now the Bridger National Forest. The map centers on the drainage of Smiths Fork and its numerous tributaries, including Porcupine Creek and Hobble Creek. A significant natural feature in the southeast is Lake Alice, formed behind a massive Landslide Dam at the foot of Lake Mountain. This geologic event created a unique alpine environment where Crystal Lake and the curiously named Lake Lake sit tucked into the high terrain. The presence of the Smiths Fork Guard Sta and several scattered Mines and a Prospect suggest a mid-century balance of federal land management and resource exploration in Lincoln County.
