The northern shore of Contra Costa County is heavily developed with the Naval Reservation at Port Chicago and the extensive Mt Diablo Naval Reservation to the south. The region's petrochemical and chemical footprint is evidenced by an Oil Refinery near Avon and the Monsanto facility along the Southern Pacific tracks.

Transit through the Carquinez Strait and the rail corridors of the A T & S F and Southern Pacific define the local economy, connecting industrial hubs like Mococo and Martinez with the interior. On the Solano County side, the environment remains dominated by marshes and islands such as Joice Island and Morrow Island, where the Morrow Island Farm and Ehmann Club represent a starkly different use of the delta's wetland geography.
