Coteau des Prairies, a prominent glacial upland, dominates the landscape of this Lincoln County region. The terrain is defined by the headwaters of the Yellow Medicine River and its tributary, the N Br Yellow Medicine River, which meander through a grid of agricultural section lines and rural township roads. This area reflects a long-established pattern of Upper Midwest settlement, where family farms and community hubs are centered around small burial grounds and crossroads. Notable local sites include the Saint Johns Cantius Cem in the southwestern corner and the Alta Vista Cem near the center of the sheet. To the north, Porter Cem sits near the namesake town boundary, while Oak Lake provides one of the few significant standing water bodies in this elevated prairie environment.
