The Yellow River and its N Fork carve through the agricultural plateau of Winneshiek County in this recent survey. This area is characterized by a high density of small rural burial grounds, likely serving the early Scandinavian and German farmstead communities that settled this part of Iowa. Many of these sites, such as the Washington Prairie Cem and Norwegian Methodist Cem, are located at prominent crossroads like Washington Prairie Rd and Lincoln Hwy Rd. The landscape is a network of section-line roads, including Centennial Rd and Co Hwy W48, which connect isolated features like Walden Pond and the Roy Schultz Property Cem. The mapping shows the continued significance of these small, family-linked landmarks amidst the extensive drainage systems of the Trout River and Trout Cr in the northern portion of the quadrangle.
