The Potomac settlement sits in the southern portion of this Missoula County quadrangle, situated along Potomac RD near the confluence of Union Cr and Camas Cr. This 2014 survey documents the complex topography of the Lolo National Forest, where the terrain transitions from the high elevations of Morrison Peak and Little Belmont Point down to the river valleys. The Blackfoot River carves through the center of the sheet, featuring the Thibideau Rapids and the historic crossing at Whitaker Bridge. Evidence of the region’s glacial and geological history is visible in the broad expanses of Ninemile Prairie and Camas Prairie, as well as distinctive landmarks like Goose Rock and Red Rock. A network of forest roads, including Dunnigan Gulch RD and Johnsrud Park RD, provides access to the steep drainages of Dunnigan Gulch and Black Canyon.
