Deeply incised valleys and the broad basin of the Mississippi River define this 1957 survey of the Driftless Area. The twin communities of Potosi and Tennyson anchor the upland ridges, connected to the riverfront by a series of steep drainages like Hog Hollow and Rigsby Hollow. The river economy is clearly visible along the shore, where the Chicago Burlington and Quincy railroad skirts the base of the bluffs near Potosi (Station).

Evidence of the region's lead mining heritage appears near British Hollow, where a labeled Mine and an area marked (Abandoned) indicate the lead-zinc district's industrial past. Cultural landscape markers are frequent, including St Thomas Cem, Osceola Cem, and rural education hubs like Willow Creek Sch. The southeastern corner is dominated by the confluence of the Platte River and the Little Platte River before they enter the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife and Fish Refuge.
