Hudson River life at the end of the nineteenth century is defined by its strategic transit corridors and established riverfront estates. This survey, conducted by W. M. Beaman and J. W. Thom, illustrates the industrial and social landscape of eastern Ulster and northern Dutchess counties. The eastern bank is anchored by the village of Rhinebeck and the estates of Hyde Park, while the West Shore R.R. skirts the western shore through Port Ewen and Ulster Park.

Navigation remains central to the region, marked by the prominent Esopus Light near Vanderberg Cove. Inland, the landscape transitions to a network of hamlets like Clinton Corners, Schultzville, and Washington Hollow, all connected by the Philadelphia Reading and New England RR. The dense distribution of named hills such as Berger Hill and Traver Hill suggests a topography of active upland farming and small-scale milling along Wappinger Creek and Crum Elbow Creek before twentieth-century suburbanization.
