Lake Superior dominates the northern edge of this Upper Peninsula landscape, where the settlements of Onota and Rock River sit near the rugged shoreline of Shelter Bay. Deep within the Hiawatha National Forest, the terrain is defined by a dense network of water features including Deer Lake, Ginpole Lake, and the winding course of the Rock River. The presence of Rock River Falls and Silver Falls indicates the significant elevation drops common to this coastal region. Long-distance hikers are represented by the N Country National Scenic Trail, which threads through the timberlands. The map also identifies smaller interior locations such as Graves and Spirit Lake, alongside numerous forest roads like Old M-28 and Co Road 450 that provide access to the remote backwoods and the wetlands of the Spider Ponds.
