The Canadian River cuts through the northern reaches of this landscape, carving a wide valley across the boundary of Ellis and Roger Mills counties. This region is defined by the managed prairie of the Black Kettle National Grassland, which is distributed in several distinct blocks throughout the territory. These public lands preserve the rolling character of the Oklahoma plains, interspersed with numerous drainages such as Quartermaster Creek and Sourdough Creek that feed into the larger river system.
