The California National Historic Trail follows the Salt Lake Cut-off through the northern reaches of this landscape, tracing a primary migration route across the high desert and mountains at the turn of the 21st century. This remote area, straddling the Cassia County and Box Elder County line and the Idaho Utah state border, is defined by the high elevations of the Raft River Mountains. Local history is centered on the small Clear Creek Cemetery and evidence of early industry like the Gravel Pits and various prospects found in the canyons. High-altitude water sources such as Lake Rosevere, Bull Lake, and Big Spring feed a complex drainage system including the Raft River and Clear Creek. The region is largely contained within the Sawtooth National Forest, where topography ranges from the flat expanses of Bull Flat to the sharp heights of Rosevere Point and the Pinnacle.
