Stop Table and the surrounding high plains of Custer County dominate this landscape, characterized by a series of distinct flat-topped mesas known locally as tables. These geographic features, including Schukar Table, Hansen Table, and Rock Island Table, rise above the carved drainages of Roten Valley and Sells Valley. The distribution of these landmarks reflects the traditional agricultural and ranching divisions of the Nebraska sandhills region, where flat upland areas provided the most viable ground for early homesteading and cultivation.
