The low-lying wetlands between Lake Maurepas and Lake Pontchartrain form the primary landscape of this 2018 survey. The small settlement of Ruddock sits as a lonely outpost along the transportation corridor that traverses these marshy reaches. This corridor is defined by the modern interstate and the parallel path of Old US Hwy 51, tracing a narrow line of dry ground through the cypress swamps and tidal basins of St. John the Baptist Parish.
