1895 Map of Sackets Harbor

USGS Topo · Published 1947

About this map

Madison Barracks and the strategic Sackets Harbor L.H. anchor this nineteenth-century survey of the eastern Lake Ontario shoreline. The military presence at Sackets Harbor defines the northern edge of the map, where the R. W. and O. R. R. (Carthage Branch) meets the waterfront. Moving inland, the landscape is a network of small agricultural hubs and family-named hamlets, including Greene Settlement, Thomas Settlement, and Stowell Corner. The rail corridor of the Rome Watertown and Ogdensburg R. R. cuts a straight path through the eastern townships of Adams and Ellisburg, connecting the villages of Adams Center and Adams. Along the coast, the sheltered waters of Henderson Bay and Whites Bay provide a backdrop for maritime activity near Henderson Harbor, while numerous waterways like Sandy Creek drain the interior uplands.
