Smaller settlements like Eckert, Benton, and Weinsburg dot the countryside, many of which served as local post offices or rail stops for the surrounding farmsteads.

The hydrology of the region is defined by the River Raisin and the Saline River, with the distinctive Raisin Basin located just south of Bridgewater. This 1901-1902 survey illustrates the transition from primitive wagon roads to a more structured township system, showing clear boundaries between Washtenaw and Lenawee counties.
