Salona and the nearby community of Mallard anchor this portion of Montague County, characterized by a landscape heavily shaped by mid-century water management projects. Numerous dams and sediment control structures, such as Soil Conservation Service Site 3 Dam and Soil Conservation Service Sediment Control Structure 8-1, are distributed throughout the drainage basins of Denton Creek and Mallard Creek. These features illustrate the intensive efforts to manage erosion and runoff in this North Texas ranching and oil-producing region.
